Design Analysis - Colosseum
Three sets of interpretations of the building
Geometric/mass - An evaluation of how the areas and masses in the building are a result of the geometry. In the center is an urban map of Rome, signifying the Colosseum as the center of the center, the meeting of the cardo and documanos axis. The corresponding model shows a duality; on the bottom it shows how the geometric forms serve as a base for the areas and masses. Whilst on the top the areas and masses are derived from the negative space.
Grid/construction - A culmination of the orthogonal and radial grids as resulted from the constructive elements. In the plan the black central area represents the underground areas. The model emphasizes the underlying structural elements and features various section to demonstrate the complexity of the buildings grid.
Light - The analysis consists of a light forecast for the upcoming good friday, a day when the pope speaks at the Colosseum. Since the referal is to a current day event, the drawings feature the Colosseum as it is today, with a hint of what the full building would have looked like on the same date. The model is the 3D interpretation of the shadows.
